MAINE, USA — Sunday marked the first day of fall, but the leaves are just getting started! It’s the perfect time to check in on the foliage color change across our beautiful state.
Let’s start with when we should typically see fall foliage peak in Maine.
The northern regions would normally showcase their best colors over the coming week, with the vibrant hues moving southward after that. Inland areas generally peak in early October, while the coastline shows off its brightest autumnal colors by mid to late October.
Now, let’s dive into the latest foliage report.
According to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, we’re currently seeing less than 30% color change statewide. However, in Northern Maine, rangers are reporting up to 50% -- a moderate color change and the highest in the state!
We’re holding onto colder temperatures this week. That will help to break down the chlorophyll in the leaves, revealing those beautiful autumn colors.
So, whether you're hiking or just sipping cider on the porch, make sure to soak in all the fall beauty as the state is blanketed in it over the coming weeks.
