With October fast approaching, it's time to make Maine foliage viewing plans

Down East recommends seeing the colors turn amid the lakes and mountains of Rangeley.

PORTLAND, Maine — On Thursday, Sept. 19 just before 3 p.m., the temperature in Caribou is sitting at a toasty 80 degrees. Does that make you want to go pick apples—or head to a lake for a swim?

It's been a September to savor in Maine, warm and sunny and nearly free of precipitation, but the first leaves are turning and autumn is clearly on the way. Down East magazine will not be caught unprepared.

Editor in Chief Will Grunewald joined us on 207 to talk about some of the articles in the October issue, including a series of photos capturing the splendor of fall foliage around the Rangeley lakes.

As the magazine notes, "when the rugged grandeur of Maine's western mountains converges with quintessential small-town charm," the result is "priceless."

Will also told us about a wood carver from Bridgton who's making eye-catching sculptures out of gourds and the Passamaquoddy fishermen who are taking unusual steps to preserve Maine's elver population.
