MAINE, USA — Most of Maine has already seen the first snow of the season, but ice has been elusive. Another storm is rolling our way and while there will be some snow from it, ice has me more concerned.
The storm won't be a large one and won't have much precipitation. But, when it comes to ice, it doesn't take much to cause problems.
Light precip will break out this afternoon. It will begin as snow inland and a rain, snow mix along the coast. Roads will start to grease up after dark, especially in local neighborhoods.
The snow phase of the storm won't last long. While cold air oozes south locking in subreezing temps, warm air aloft will glide over top of it. This will flip precipitation types from snow over to sleet and freezing rain.
I anticipate a challenging Tuesday morning commute. Freezing mist and drizzle will be falling. It doesn't take much ice to create problems. Handrails will have a light glaze, front steps, sidewalks and driveways will need some sand for traction. Many roads will need a treatment of salt. I'm sure there will be some school delays too.
The storm will wind down with one final burst early Tuesday afternoon. That final burst will most likely be in the form of snow with additional small accumulations.
