Southern Mainers enjoy first major snowfall of the season

"Winter vacation, holiday vacation was not fun because it was all rain, so this is really exciting," one Portland resident said.

PORTLAND, Maine — People in Southern Maine are dealing with snow and snow removal for the first time this winter season.

"Winter vacation, holiday vacation was not fun because it was all rain, so this is really exciting which is why we're out here right now. We're going to take full advantage of this snow," Portland resident Aviva Shaw, said.

On Sunday, Shaw was getting the support all parents love when snow falls: help shoveling the driveway. Just down the road, one family was outside as the snowfall marked much more than just inches.

Amanda Gallinat's two-year-old son got to play in the snow for the first time.

"It’s exciting to see him excited to be in the snow because presumably, he will spend a lot of time in the snow," she said.

While the snow is exciting for many, it brings a seasonal job for some.

"I was out about five this morning, some of my guys a little bit earlier, but it didn't start accumulating until a little later than we expected," Zach Hanna, a plow driver with Cape Landscapes, said.

Hanna said Sunday's snowfall was perfect for plowing since it wasn't raining and he said the snow was scraping pretty easily. Hanna said he was part of a crew with five trucks working in Cape Elizabeth and South Portland. He said they plowed about 80 lots, both homes and businesses.

"It's definitely slippery once something's been plowed. You know you have a little bit of traction when there's some snow, but once it's been scraped down it gets pretty slick underneath," Hanna said.

Some Mainers said the road conditions may be the worst thing about winter.

"Of course the driving conditions are going to be a little scarier now, but hopefully everyone stays pretty safe on the roads," Gallinat said.
