Thousands in Maine still without power after weekend storm

After a spring storm swept across the state Saturday, many people in southern Maine are still without power Monday.

MAINE, Maine — The early spring storm caused a number of problems across the state late Saturday night.

While some areas near the western mountains received more than a foot of snow, Mainers woke Sunday morning to icy roadways and power outages. For many in Cumberland and York counties, those outages have continued into Monday.

As of 2:15 p.m. Monday:

Central Maine Power is reporting more than 68,000 customers without power. More than half of those outages were in Cumberland County. All CMP customers in the town of Harpswell were reported without power.

Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, CMP officials said in a news release that current conditions "have created incredibly dangerous road and work conditions for our crews."

"Our first priority tonight is the safety of our customers and crews. That includes making downed power lines safe. As the storm moves though our service area, we will begin widespread restoration efforts on Sunday. To report an emergency, please contact 911," the release stated.

Fire departments in southern Maine shared safety reminders late Saturday night as trees and power lines continued to fall.

Please help us, fire, DPW and Parks out by only going out if absolutely necessary. There are many trees and power lines...
