Severe thunderstorms bring heavy rains, toppled trees, power outages

Much of the state was under a severe thunderstorm warning until 8 p.m. on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

MAINE, USA — Strong thunderstorms swept through the state Thursday afternoon, bringing some relief amid a record-setting heatwave.

Much of Maine was under severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. Thursday while a cold front rolled through. The National Weather Service Gray ME said it expected "damaging wind gusts" and downed trees with torrential downpours. 

As of 11:17 p.m., Versant Power was reporting 2,565 customers without power. Central Maine Power was reporting 8,884 customers without power at approximately 11:17 p.m., with the majority of outages in Cumberland County. 

Viewers shared with NEWS CENTER Maine images and videos of lightning and heavy rains. 

NEWS CENTER Maine crews in the field sent in videos of toppled trees as well.
