PORTLAND, Maine — This heat has been so impressive that it's not only setting daily records. It set an all-time record.
Caribou hit 96 stifling degrees Wednesday afternoon. That's the hottest temperature ever recorded in the city. It's happened three other times since records began back in 1939. Other impressive stats include a high of 95 in Bangor on Wednesday, tying the record. Portland had a high of 90 degrees, the first 90-degree temperature in about two years.
Thursday is the last excessively hot day, however, it was the hottest of them all. We had a land breeze (the opposite of a sea breeze), which brought the stifling heat all the way to the coastline. More records were very likely broken today.
As this cold front moved through Thursday afternoon, thunderstorms began to pop up into the evening. Some of these were damaging — causing power outages and downed trees. We saw strong wind gusts, lots of lightning, and heavy downpours.
