SACO, Maine — A woman from West Bath died from injuries she suffered in a crash on the Maine Turnpike in Saco on Monday night.
The crash, involving a tractor-trailer and two other vehicles, happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. at northbound mile marker 37 in Saco, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release Tuesday.
Deirdre Winberg, 33, was taken to Maine Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries, the release stated.
Moss said a preliminary investigation showed Winberg was driving a Volvo S40 sedan when she rear-ended a Jeep Compass driven by Alicia Preston, 33, of Portland. The crash caused the Volvo to spin out and come to a stop in the path of a tractor-trailer, which struck the Volvo, according to Moss.
Preston was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening, the release stated.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 36-year-old Norvel Jackson of Fairburn, Georgia, was not injured, officials said.
The tractor-trailer ended up going through the median guard rail, resulting in the closure of all three northbound lanes and the southbound passing lane for several hours. Maine State Police troopers were able to keep northbound traffic moving in the breakdown lane, according to Moss.
The tractor-trailer belonged to Three Lions Logistics Inc. out of Andover, Massachusetts, the release stated.
The crash remains under investigation, Moss said.
