NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — Maine native Mackenzie Holmes is taking her game to the next level.

Holmes was selected 26 overall by the Seattle Storm in Monday's WNBA Draft.

Holmes, who starred at Gorham High School, declared for the draft in a social media post last week, adding she plans to have surgery in May to address a reoccurring knee issue.

"I have declared for the 2024 WNBA Draft and pray that a team honors me with a selection knowing I will be ready for the start of the 2025 Training Camp," she wrote. "Your support, thoughts, and prayers at this time are appreciated!"

This season, Holmes became the all-time leading scorer in Indiana University women's basketball history. She and the Indiana Hoosiers made it to the Sweet 16 in the 2024 NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual champion South Carolina.

The 6'3" forward returned to the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland this season to play her first game in Maine since high school. The Hoosiers faced the University of Maine in front of a sold-out crowd, and Indiana came out on top 67-59. Holmes scored a team-high 22 points.

"She played on that floor—and so just all those kinds of memories of everything that's happened there for her career—and then being able to come back [with] all she's accomplished now, probably beyond most people's imaginations," her father, Lenny Holmes, told NEWS CENTER Maine.

During her high school career, Holmes led the Gorham High School Rams to two state championships and was named the 2019 Maine Gatorade Player of the Year. At Indiana, she was named Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year last season. Holmes was also named to multiple first team All-American lists in 2022-23.
