PORTLAND, Maine — An investigation is underway into the death of a resident Wednesday at the Cumberland County Jail.
At about 5:45 a.m., a correctional officer at the Cumberland County Jail discovered a resident unresponsive in their cell during routine rounds, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
Deputies said immediate action was taken by the officer who called for medical assistance.
Medical staff at the jail and Portland MEDCU responded to the incident, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
The sheriff's office said the death remains under investigation by Portland police, the Maine Department of Corrections, and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
"As part of our standard procedure, we will refrain from releasing the name of the deceased until all necessary notifications have been made," the release stated.
The state medical examiner's office will determine the cause and manner of death, according to deputies.
The sheriff's office said any further inquiries can be directed toward the Portland Police Department and the Office of the Maine Attorney General.
No additional information was released.
This is the second resident death at the jail in less than a month.
