A resident of the jail was found unresponsive in their cell Friday morning during routine rounds, deputies said.

PORTLAND, Maine — An investigation is underway after a resident was found dead in the cell Friday morning at the Cumberland County Jail.

At about 8:40 a.m. during routine rounds, a correctional officer found a resident unresponsive in their cell, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The officer called for assistance from the jail's medical staff and Portland MEDCU but attempts to revive the individual were unsuccessful, the release stated.

Deputies said the investigation has been turned over to the Portland Police Department, the Maine Department of Corrections, and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.

The identity of the individual is not being released until their family has been notified, according to the release.

The cause of death will be determined by the chief medical examiner's office and the Portland Police Department, the release said.
