WATERVILLE, Maine — A girl was airlifted to a hospital Monday after she was seriously injured during an incident Monday in Waterville.
It happened shortly before 4 p.m. near the area of Two Cent Bridge at the Head of Falls along the Kennebec River, Waterville police said in a release Tuesday. Emergency officials said in the release they believed the girl may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time.
A responding officer apparently saw the girl go over a railing she was sitting on and fall about 25 feet onto rocks below, the release stated.
The Waterville police and fire departments, along with Maine State Police, rendered aid and removed her from the rocks. She was then flown to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.
“Due to the quick work of our first responders, the patient was safely rescued from the rocky shore and provided immediate lifesaving care," Maj. Jason Longley of the Waterville Police Department said in the release. "The high level of training and proficiency displayed by everyone on scene was an incredible thing to witness.”
