SANFORD, Maine — Sanford police are still searching for a suspect who they say stabbed a man at a Family Dollar and are looking for witnesses.
Sanford police responded to the Family Dollar located in Midtown Mall on Main Street on Oct. 6 at 10:02 p.m., according to a press release. When officers arrived, they found the victim, 59-year-old Robert Wilson from Sanford, on his knees with bystanders controlling the bleeding.
Wilson was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with stab wounds to his back and left side. He is currently considered to be in stable condition, according to police.
"The scene was documented, evidence collected, potential video footage was inquired about, and witnesses were interviewed," the press release said.
Sanford police gave an update on Wednesday after reviewing video footage of the incident, saying the stabbing may have resulted from an "ongoing fight between both parties." Police said it remains unclear what the fight was about, or what led to it.
The male suspect has long hair and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a backward-facing hat, and a multi-colored hood sweatshirt that was not tie-dye or camo, according to police. He also allegedly stole a backpack from the scene. The man was last spotted heading north, but police did not give any more details about if he was in a vehicle or on foot.
The York County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit helped try to track the suspect.
Police said they have leads in their investigation and are actively pursuing them.
According to the Wednesday release, there is currently no evidence to suggest a backpack involved was stolen.
"We are actively seeking witnesses to the incident and the unknown male seen in the attached photo," the release stated.
"He may have an eye injury and could provide crucial information to help us better understand what transpired," according to the release.
Anyone with information related to the crime is asked to contact Sanford Detective Cutler at 207-324-3644.
