OGUNQUIT, Maine — Ogunquit police and other area law enforcement agencies are investigating reports of gunshots fired at The Hideaway Inn on the southern end of Main Street, which is also Route 1.
Police shared an update at 11 a.m. Monday stating that the incident had been resolved and the road had been reopened. Police had previously closed traffic and told residents in the area to lock their doors.
According to Ogunquit police Chief John Lizanecz, the department received its first call just before 4 a.m.
The Hideaway Inn is home to about 20 J-1 visa workers, who hold various jobs in the community, according to Lizanecz. He said several people in the area reported hearing roughly five to 10 gunshots coming from the inn, but Lizanecz suggested that fireworks may have been mistaken for gunfire.
"At this point, we’re investigating whether there were actually shots fired or fireworks," Lizanecz said.
Remnants of fireworks were found at the inn, the chief confirmed. But despite reports about a possible shooting, Lizanecz said no one was reported injured.
"We’re 100 percent confident there’s no threat to the public," the chief added.
Officials said Ogunquit Town Hall would be closed all day Monday while it was being used to support police and those who have been displaced.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and asking anyone who may have information should call Wells dispatch at 207-646-9354.
