WALDOBORO, Maine — The Waldoboro Fire Department responded to three fires in the span of six hours Sunday. Nobody was injured, according to the department, but the Maine Fire Marshals Office and the Maine Forest Rangers are investigating how they started.
All three fires started as brush fires, according to a social media post by the Waldoboro Fire Department.
The department said it first responded to a fire on Washington Road at 1:50 p.m. Sunday. That fire was extinguished fairly quickly, officials said.
The second fire was reported just before 4 p.m. Sunday behind Gordon Libby Forest Products on Route 1. The fire spread to one of the transfer station's trash compactor trailers that was being stored there, according to fire officials.
The third fire was called in at around 8 p.m. Sunday. It started as a brush fire, but spread to the back side of the former Movie Pizza Shoppe building on Jefferson Street. The fire spread into the attic spaces of the building, officials said.
The Waldoboro Fire Department thanked its several other agencies that responded and assisted, including departments from Damariscotta, Nobleboro, Bremen, Warren, Jefferson and Friendship. The Lincoln County Emergency Management Association and the Waldoboro Police Department also responded.
Investigators are working to determine if the fires are related and how they started. Fire officials are asking anyone who saw something strange or may know something about the fires to call the Waldoboro Police Department at 207-832-4500.
