Warning from Cumberland County Sheriff's Office about phone scam

Scammers are calling and claiming they are a member of the sheriff's office.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is warning people about a recent increase in reports of "fraudulent scam calls."

The calls are coming from people identifying themselves as various law enforcement officials from the sheriff's office, according to a press release sent Thursday afternoon.

The scammers tell the callers that they missed a federal grand jury summons. They instruct the callers to put money onto a gift card, and relay the information from the gift card to the caller, according to the sheriff's office.

The calls are placed from phone numbers that have been computer generated and are not connected to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

"The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement do not conduct business in this manner and encourage individuals contacted to pay close attention and not provide any personal or financial information to anyone over the phone," the press release reads.

Anyone who suspects they have received a scam attempt should contact their local police.
