Crews still cleaning up diesel spill in Mattawamkeag after train derailment

Officials said about 1,200 gallons of fuel spilled from the train engine after the derailment.

MATTAWAMKEAG, Maine — Crews are continuing to clean up a diesel spill in Mattawamkeag after a train derailed there Tuesday afternoon.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection and CSX Transportation were on the scene Wednesday to continue the recovery effort.

According to the Lincoln Fire Department, two box cars went off the track when a CSX train hit a parked train car around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials said the axle of one of the cars punctured the tank of the train engine, creating a leak.

In a statement, Maine DEP said about 1,200 gallons of diesel spilled during the derailment.

Its team and CSX were able to safely remove around 2,450 gallons of diesel from the tank into temporary storage.

Maine DEP confirmed that no fuel leaked into the Penobscot River, which runs next to the railroad.

CSX and Maine DEP will be installing recovery wells in the railroad bed on Friday to recover what they can from the remaining leaked diesel.

In a statement, CSX’s communications team said, "Our primary focus is the health and safety of on-site staff and personnel, the surrounding community, and mitigating risk to the environment."

The Lincoln and Mattawamkeag fire departments responded to the incident Tuesday and reported that no one was injured.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
