Officials said the axle of a box car punctured the diesel tank of the train engine. The tank had an estimated 2,500 gallons of fuel inside.

MATTAWAMKEAG, Maine — A section of a train derailed Tuesday afternoon in Mattawamkeag.

Two box cars of a CSX train derailed, causing a large diesel fuel leak near the Penobscot River, according to the Lincoln Fire Department

Crews responded to the scene at about 4:30 p.m. and discovered that one of the cars completely overturned.

Officials said the axel of that car punctured the diesel tank of the train engine with an estimated 2,500 gallons of fuel inside.
