YORK, Maine — State police have publicly identified a man who died Feb. 19 in a crash in York.

At about 1:45 p.m. that day, state troopers received several reports about a single-vehicle crash on the southbound side of the Maine Turnpike near mile marker 7 in York, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.

When troopers arrived at the scene, they discovered a 2023 Dodge pickup truck had left the roadway and crashed into the tree line, Moss said.

"As a result of the crash the vehicle and several trees caught fire which were extinguished by the York Fire Department," the release stated.

Moss said the turnpike remained open while the scene was investigated. Only the right lane was closed to protect emergency personnel.

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Matthew Breton of Cumberland, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He died at the scene, the release stated.

Maine State Police urge anyone who may have information regarding the crash to contact Tpr. Swiatek at 207-624-7076.

The Maine Forest Service, York Fire Department, York Police Department, Maine Turnpike Authority, and National Wrecker Service assisted at the scene.
