Driver dies in crash on Maine Turnpike in York

The truck and several trees caught fire after the crash and had to be extinguished by firefighters, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

YORK, Maine — The driver of a pickup truck died Monday after the truck crashed and caught fire off the Maine Turnpike in York.

It happened around 1:45 p.m. on the southbound side of the turnpike near mile marker 7, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release Tuesday.

Upon arrival at the scene, Maine State Police troopers found a 2023 Dodge pickup truck had gone off the highway and crashed into the tree line. As a result, the truck and several trees caught fire and had to be extinguished by members of the York Fire Department, the release stated.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle, according to Moss. Maine State Police are working with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to figure out the driver's identity.

The Maine Turnpike remained open throughout Monday's investigation, with only the right lane closed to protect emergency officials.

Maine State Police ask that anyone who may have information about the crash contact Trooper Swiatek at 207-624-7076.

Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by the Maine Forest Service, York Fire Department, York Police Department, Maine Turnpike Authority, and National Wrecker Service.
