BOSTON — Three weeks after a mass shooting in Lewiston claimed the lives of 18 people, Mass General for Children announced a patient who was injured in the shooting has been discharged.
A spokesperson with Massachusetts General Hospital told NEWS CENTER Maine on Wednesday Gavin Robitaille, a sophomore at Edward Little High School in Auburn, was discharged on Nov. 8.
Mass General's confirmation comes two days after Central Maine Healthcare announced another patient injured in the Lewiston mass shooting was released from Central Maine Medical Center. Two other patients injured in the mass shooting remain in CMMC's care, both reportedly in "stable condition."
A GoFundMe was created to support Robitaille and his family during his road to recovery.
At 16 years old, Robitaille was reportedly shot during the deadly mass shooting at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant. Robitaille was injured at the bowling alley, according to the GoFundMe.
Robitaille's family released an update Wednesday on GoFundMe regarding his recovery, thankful for community support.
"We are pleased to share Gavin has been discharged from Mass General for Children. We thank the talented teams at Mass General for Children and Central Maine Medical Center for their help saving Gavin and seeing all of us through our darkest moments. While we are thrilled to be back home, Gavin is beginning a long road of follow-up care, much of it in Boston for the foreseeable future – his next surgery is scheduled for November 27th at Mass General. The journey ahead is long, tough and financially hard, but we count ourselves exceedingly lucky to be surrounded by friends and loved ones. We can’t thank everyone enough for the ongoing outpouring of generosity, warmth, and love, as well continued respect for our privacy as we embark down a long road of healing as a family."
