LEWISTON, Maine — Nurses, doctors, and health care workers lined the halls at Central Maine Medical Center on Monday as one of the patients injured in the Lewiston mass shooting on Oct. 25 was discharged.
Central Maine Healthcare said in a news release Monday the team members lined the halls "to pay silent and respectful tribute to the patient leaving the hospital after a two-and-a-half-week stay."
"As the patient was wheeled down the hall, team members put their hands on their hearts in a gesture of solidarity and empathy," the release stated.
The patient was one of three people still in the care of CMMC following the two shootings at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant.
The two other patients remain in the hospital's care but are reported to be in "stable condition," according to CMH.
"We felt that given what happened to this community on October 25, a silent, heartfelt tribute was appropriate," Kris Chaisson, RN and chief nursing officer at CMMC said in the release. "The doctors, nurses and team members who have cared for these patients wanted to acknowledge this milestone, while at the same time remain mindful that this patient, and many of us, have a long road ahead."
In response to the heartbreaking events on Oct. 25, Central Maine Healthcare established the CMMC Compassionate Care Fund for Trauma Response and Support as part of its "ongoing responsibility to continue serving as the regional trauma center for central Maine," the health organization said in the release.
