LEWISTON, Maine — Bob Young is holding onto the memories of his son and grandson.
Bill and Aaron Young were among the 18 killed in the mass shooting in Lewiston Wednesday night.
The father and son were out for a night of bowling at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley, something they did most Wednesday nights.
From his home in central Maine, Bob says his son Bill and grandson Aaron have always had an amazing bond.
"Just a father and a son, that loved each other and you know, did their things," Bob said.
Aaron was passionate about bowling and would get in practice rounds on Wednesdays with his coach Bob Violette, another victim of the mass shooting.
"He loved Aaron because Aaron was very detail-minded… if you told him to do something, that’s exactly what he did," Bob said.
A boy with a huge heart and a quiet demeanor, Aaron was recently awarded a citizenship award for his kindness and compassion.
"You know, he’s very gentle, didn’t have a bad word for anybody," Bob said.
Especially not his father, who Bob Young says Aaron idolized.
Bill served in the U.S. Air Force, just like his dad Bob, and went on to work as a mechanic.
"He loved his job, he loved professional wrestling… when he was a little kid we used to go to wrestling matches and stuff," Bob said.
One thing all three of them shared? A love for fishing.
Getting out on the water to fish with his boys was one of Bob's favorite things to do.
"I miss it already," Bob said.
But on the shores of a lake where he's cast hundreds of lines with his son and grandson, there's always the reminder, that even in the depths of this heartache, the memories will always surface here.
"Love you both, miss you," Bob said.
