Lewiston community pulls together after devastating tragedy

A look into the lives and the hearts of those in Lewiston during an unimaginable tragedy.

LEWISTON, Maine — Two days after a mass shooting event in Lewiston, the search for the suspected shooter ended Friday night after he was found dead by law enforcement.

During this trying period, the hashtag #LAStrong has been a beacon of strength, resonating in the physical and mental fabric of the community.

"Lewiston has always been a tight-knit community supporting each other, and I think that’s going to come out very strong in the next days, weeks, months, and that the community will work together to heal as a whole," local resident Miia Zeller said.

Despite the challenges, locals are making an extraordinary effort to come together during this trying time.

"Ever since I moved to Lewiston, I just fell in love with the community, and I wanted to make a visual representation of that for people to see, especially in these times. I think any type of positivity, healing, and hope would be appreciated by the community," Zeller said.

She has chosen to show her support for the victims and their loved ones by placing hearts all across the city.

Suzanne Keithan, a Lewiston local, shared her feelings during this difficult period.

"Everyone is really shocked. I don’t think they know how to feel. It hasn’t sunk in yet," Keithan said.

Kaydenz Kitchen and Pantry, a local nonprofit, has been a pillar of support.

They've been working tirelessly to assist the community with a focus on delivering essential items.

Kevin Boilard, the owner of Kaydenz Kitchen and Pantry, emphasized their role.

"I think what we do is on a small scale. We are not the community heroes. It’s our first responders—those are the true heroes," Boilard said. "We are just doing the small little piece that we can."

The organization's efforts have been directed toward fulfilling common requests, including baby formula, diapers, and wipes.

As the community begins the process of healing, residents are looking forward to events that bring them together in person, such as gatherings and memorials.

The resilience and unity that Lewiston has shown during these trying times serve as a testament to the strength of its community.

As we remember the lives lost and continue to navigate the challenges that lie ahead, the spirit of "Lewiston Strong" persists.
