ELLSWORTH, Maine — The remains of a Sullivan man have been identified after they were discovered in Ellsworth earlier this month.
Shortly before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, Maine State Police (MSP) were notified by police in Ellsworth of human skeletal remains that were discovered, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
"Commercial land surveyors discovered the remains in the woods off the Red Bridge Road in Ellsworth," the release stated.
MSP's Major Crimes Unit North responded to assist in the investigation, and the remains were taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed, according to Moss.
The state medical examiner positively identified the remains as Anson Snowdeal, 43, of Sullivan.
Moss said Snowdeal was reportedly last seen in Ellsworth on Feb. 9, 2022, when he left a family member's apartment on foot.
An investigation led by MSP revealed Snowdeal "disappeared voluntarily and appeared to be avoiding efforts to be located," the release said.
"The cause and manner of death are pending but the autopsy and police investigation does not support that Mr. Snowdeal’s death was the result of criminal conduct," the release said further.
No additional details were released.
