The 77-year-old was removing a downed tree with a tractor when the tree fatally struck him, police said.

FAIRFIELD, Maine — Police on Wednesday publicly identified the man who was fatally injured while removing a downed tree in Fairfield during a windstorm Monday afternoon.

William S. Tanner, 77, of Fairfield was removing a downed tree with a tractor when the tree fatally struck him, Fairfield police told NEWS CENTER Maine Wednesday.

First responders were called to the scene on Norridgewock Road at approximately 3:34 p.m. Monday.

Tanner is the second person known to have died in Maine during Monday's storm. Around noon, emergency officials responded to a report that a man in Windham had been fatally struck by part of a falling tree while he was working to remove debris from his roof.

Troy Olson, 40, died "immediately," according to a news release from the Windham Police Department.
