Lightning strike believed to be cause of fire at Freeport home, officials say

Yarmouth's fire chief told NEWS CENTER Maine the home's garage was destroyed in the fire. No injuries were reported.

FREEPORT, Maine — The cause of a house fire in Freeport that destroyed a couple's garage is believed to have been the result of a lightning strike during Wednesday's strong thunderstorms, officials say.

Several departments including crews from Freeport, Cumberland, Falmouth, Durham, Lisbon, Brunswick, and Yarmouth responded to a report of a two-story garage fire involving propane tanks located at 43 Primrose Ln. around 4:15 p.m., according to Yarmouth Fire Chief Michael Robitaille.

Robitaille said the fire was contained to the garage, and kept out of the couple's two-story home. He said he expects the family to be able to live in their home within a week, but the garage was destroyed.

A NEWS CENTER Maine crew at the scene was told the fire appeared to be out as of 6:30 p.m. No injuries were reported.

The couple that lives inside the home told NEWS CENTER Maine they heard a loud noise they believed to be a lightning strike just before the fire. Strong thunderstorms rolled through several areas of the state Wednesday afternoon, including Freeport.

Crews say another lightning strike is believed to be the cause of a second structure fire in Freeport on Wednesday.
