BANGOR, Maine — The Unlimited Solutions Clubhouse in Bangor is hosting its “Melodies for the Mind” concert on Thursday to raise money to help adults with mental illness.
The organization aims to provide a community for people with different mental illnesses, help them find employment, and further their wellness, social, and educational goals.
“I love it, it’s a very nice place to be, it feels kind of like your family,” clubhouse member April Dowling said.
The Unlimited Solutions Clubhouse is working to raise awareness of their services and resources.
“As scary as the time is when you're dealing with struggling, we've all been there, and please reach out. That is really important, we really don't want to lose any more people,” Carrie Lemos, executive director of Unlimited Solutions Clubhouse, said.
The clubhouse is fighting the stigma surrounding mental health.
“If people are against you or having that stigma, then sometimes it makes you not want to receive help, that you're wrong or you're broken, and really, we're not,” Dowling said.
Dowling and other clubhouse members will be singing together at the "Melodies for the Mind" concert.
“I can’t wait, I’m very excited for it,” she said.
The event will also feature performances from Maine Street R&B Revue and Maine humorist Tim Sample.
Sample has struggled with mental health in the past and says humor is a great way to manage stress and bridge differences.
“I do like a story where you see yourself in the picture and you see that you're human and you make mistakes. And what that does, the humor along that line, breeds empathy,” Sample said.
"Melodies for the Mind" starts at 6 p.m. Thursday at Husson University’s Gracie Theatre. Tickets for the event are available online.
