Death in Topsham ruled a homicide; suspect and victim identified

Both had apartments at the River Landing complex on Elm Street.

TOPSHAM, Maine — A woman who was fatally stabbed in Topsham on Tuesday has been identified, and the suspect is in police custody.

The incident has been ruled a homicide, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Wednesday in a news release.

Police responded to a report of an assault at River Landing apartment complex on Elm Street by an employee who worked there at about 9:30 a.m., the release stated.

Christine Miller, 64, was found stabbed to death, and officials said the suspect, 71-year-old Robert McClure, was "secured by officers on scene."

McClure and Miller had apartments at the complex, the release stated.

McClure was arrested Tuesday night and charged with murder.

Williams-Cone School is an elementary school located less than half a mile from the apartment complex. In a letter to families posted to the MSAD 75 district Facebook page, Williams-Cone School Principal Randa Rineer said the school went into a brief lockdown Tuesday morning. Rineer said the lockdown lasted for approximately five minutes and was followed by a message from her that everything was clear and the school could continue with business as usual.
