The Topsham police and fire departments responded to River Landing, an apartment complex located at 29 Elm Street, around 9:30 a.m. for a report of an assault, according to a release from the Topsham Police Department.
First responders found one person dead, and another person of interest was taken into custody a short time later, the release stated.
Maine State Police have been called in to assist with the death investigation, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss confirmed in a release.
The body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the person's manner and cause of death, according to officials.
Topsham police said there is no risk to the public and the investigation is ongoing.
Williams-Cone School is an elementary school located less than half a mile from the apartment complex. In a letter to families posted to the MSAD 75 district Facebook page, Williams-Cone School Principal Randa Rineer said the school went into a brief lockdown. Rineer said the lockdown lasted for approximately 5 minutes and was followed by a clear message from her that everything was clear and the school could continue with business as usual.
