GRAY, Maine — A man from South Portland faces numerous charges alleging he was under the influence when he was involved in a two-car crash that resulted in the death of another person.
Jean Nshimiyimana, 43, was arraigned and charged with manslaughter, operating under the influence of alcohol causing death, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
On the night of July 6, a 50-year-old man from Cumberland was killed and two minors were injured in a head-on collision in Gray.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that sheriff's deputies and Gray Fire/EMS responded to several reports of a head-on crash in the area of Portland Road and Sugar Maple Road just before 11:30 p.m.
An investigation revealed a 2022 Jeep Gladiator driven by Nshimiyimana crashed into a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 50-year-old Daniel Fackrell of Cumberland that was heading in the opposite direction, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies said Fackrell suffered life-threatening injuries and died at the scene. Two passengers who were minors in Fackrell's vehicle suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and were taken to Maine Medical Center.
On July 6, Nshimiyimana was arrested on charges of manslaughter and operating under the influence, with additional charges expected.
Portland Road was closed for several hours that day while police reconstructed the crash.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, the sheriff's office said.
