WESTBROOK, Maine — A best estimate on age for Pepper and her three other littermates is about 3-months-old. They were roughly 9-weeks when they were discovered in a local dump with their mother, now lovingly named Mama Mia.
The five of them were brought to the local humane society in Clarkesville, Georgia, which contacted the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland to see if they had room for the group.
They were driven up by a rescue group called "Road Trip Home," which helps move animals to shelters around New England.
Mamma Mia takes a little warming up, as she's been through quite a bit. Once she gets comfortable with you, though, she's an absolute love bug. While in Georgia, she spent some time in a foster home where she did well with cats, kids, and other dogs.
Mamma Mia is great in the car and loves to be close to you, so don't be surprised if she follows you around or tries to sleep in your bed.
As for her puppies, including Pepper, they have all sorts of puppy excitement. According to the ARLGP, they love to zip around the yard and play with each other. The shelter is currently working with them on potty training, which will be something you'll want to pick up if you adopt any puppy.
Because the shelter is expecting a lot of adoptions on Saturday morning, they are opening early at 10 a.m. with extra staff. They're located at 217 Landing Rd. in Westbrook.
