SEARSPORT, Maine — Following the news late last month that 27 dogs were relocated from Coastal Dreams Rescue in Bucksport by authorities, businesses and area residents gathered in Searsport Sunday to fundraise and collect donations for the animals.
Ahead of the event, organizers were skeptical they could raise $1,000 to help cover the cost of medication and healthcare for the dogs. However, late Sunday afternoon Patrick Hutchings, owner of H&H Mercantile, said they raised over $5,000.
"I'm amazed at how many people have shown up and all the volunteers. I've had people I don't even know come out to help set up tents," he said. "The community really pulled together."
Hutchings said many of those who showed up to support the dogs had once championed Coastal Dreams Rescue.
However, many are angry with the alleged conditions the dogs endured, but Hutchings was brought to tears by the outreach he and the other organizers saw.
"It makes me really happy," he said. "It's amazing."
Amanda Lister visited the silent auction, jotting down her name and bids for numerous items.
"It’s to support a great cause. I already told my boyfriend all my money is going to go away today," Lister said.
Over a year ago, Jessica Schraam and her husband opened their food truck Portable Pie Place, and were long-time supporters of the now-defunct rescue. The turnout on Sunday was surprising, they said.
"It just goes to show that this place, Maine specifically, this area of Maine specifically, has such a heart for animals," Schraam said.
Monetary contributions can be made online and in person. Donations of food, blankets, or other goods can be dropped off at Splendiferous Sweet Shoppe, Devons Kitchen, Verona Wine & Bistro, and H & H Mercantile.
