PORTLAND, Maine — "S’mores Nights" returns to Congress Square Park for the third year in a row and here’s what you can expect.
Starting Dec. 7, every Thursday locals can enjoy roasting marshmallows over an open fire, some arts and crafts, food vendors, live music, and more from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The event is hosted by the nonprofit Friends of Congress Square Park.
Each year around 1,200 people show up to make s’mores and take in the holiday splendor, according to C.J. Opperthauser, the executive director of the nonprofit.
"I think what makes this such a fun event for families is, of course, the free s’mores, but also the fun of sharing space with people you haven’t met yet and making new friends," Opperthauser said.
Other than s’mores, which are always a crowd pleaser, he said, guests can enjoy a multitude of activities.
"S'mores Nights will include performances by local talent including The Shank Painters, The Ideal Maine Band, and The Lavender Choir, as well as special evenings featuring things like kids' art-making activities with Love Lab Studios and some small themed markets," Opperthauser said. "While we're joined weekly by The Pink Waffle, we'll have additional special guest food/beverage vendors throughout the winter as well."
The event is free, but there is a suggested donation of $5 to enable the nonprofit to continue organizing more activities at the park year-round, according to their website.
