PORTLAND, Maine — On Wednesday morning, the 2023 Monument Square holiday tree was cut, loaded, delivered, and installed, as onlookers smiled with excitement and anticipation.
The 50-foot spruce tree from 35 Lubec St. in South Portland, was this year's contender.
Neighborhood residents gathered along the street to watch the tree being cut.
"It's been in the neighborhood since 1978, so we've watched things grow," one resident said.
Some on-lookers said they wouldn’t make it down to Monument Square for the tree lighting but really enjoyed watching workers cut and load the giant spruce onto the truck.
It was a team effort
Once again, Shaw Brothers Construction donated a low-bed trailer and Keeley Crane Service helped install the glorious tree after it was cut and loaded onto the flatbed, and began its journey to Monument Square at 9 a.m.
Police from South Portland and Portland, as well as Portland Parking Control, assisted in escorting the holiday giant safely to its final destination.
“We all need this right now. It’s exactly right. I think it’s just a wonderful thing, nice and festive,” said one onlooker, at the square.
The Monument Square tree lighting will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24. The lights will remain on until Jan 1.
