KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — For the second year in a row, the Kennebunkport Historical Society is hosting a scarecrow-building contest to raise funds for the preservation and protection of its local history.
A total of eight contestants are showing off their artistic skills and have constructed scarecrows using pumpkins, gourds, wood, clothing, and other inventive add-ons. The theme this year is "Historic Kennebunkport."
With a $1 donation, locals can vote for their favorites online. The money raised will be split between the winner and the Kennebunkport Historical Society.
"The operation of our small nonprofit is extensive," Kristin Lewis Haight, executive director of the historical society, said. "Our mission is to protect, preserve, and present the unique history of Kennebunkport, Maine. We serve that mission by protecting our archival collection, educating the community of locals and visitors, stewarding multiple properties, and much more."
Lewis Haight said it is the hard work of volunteers, staff, the board of directors, and fundraising efforts that keep the historical society thriving.
