SANFORD (NEWS CENTER Maine) — A massive wildfire that burned 314 acres across three towns in York County is no longer a threat. Crews from more than a dozen fire departments in southern Maine and New Hampshire worked around the clock to contain the fast-moving fire.
The fire started late Wednesday afternoon and because of strong winds spread fast.

Eighty firefighters from more than a dozen departments battled the fire for more than 20 hours. Drones were used to locate intense areas and aircraft to drop hundreds of gallons of water.
Sanford Fire Chief Steve Benotti said it wasn’t until they were able to get bulldozers in there that they were able to start cutting the fire line and slow down the spread of the fire.
Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading and they spent much of Thursday putting out hot spots.
NEWS CENTER Maine spoke with crews as they made their way out of the fire zone. They said this was the biggest fire they’ve seen in York County in years.
