Halloween trick-or-treating forecast

It's been a spooky start to October weather, but will it get scarier for the holiday?

PORTLAND, Maine — It’s the 'spookiest' time of the year in the Pine Tree State. Goblins and ghouls are roaming the north woods while pumpkins can be seen from Downeast all the way to the western mountains. I even saw a black cat chasing a ghost on the southern coast.

With just 10 days left until Halloween, the big question on everyone’s mind is: what cards will Mother Nature deal us this year for our trick-or-treating adventures?

Let’s take a look back at some Halloween weather extremes from the past and peek into the future forecast to find out if you’ll need a raincoat or a snow shovel this time around.

Most will not remember October 31st, 1946 in Maine. It was a whopping 80 degrees and those Halloween costumes were clinging to your body like a sweaty, wet rag.

But at least you didn’t have to have snow boots on like back in 2011 when the snow depth was two inches deep or need a raft to get around in the more than 3" deluge from 1955.

Still, does 18 degrees sound like fun to anyone? I’d need two winter coats and long johns along with my costume just to get around and find candy.

For this year, the weather pattern doesn’t look to be that scary at this time. A cold front will be draped in eastern Canada on the morning of Halloween.

As long as the front stays to our west, temps should stay on the mild side so we can almost rule out snow on Halloween this year.

But it will only take a south wind and a ripple of low pressure to give us some showers with that setup.

No, I won’t be dancing like this mummy on the graphic, because no one wants to see that, but I can tell you that I’ve snuck in a few showers to the forecast for trick-or-treating.

The same goes for Bangor where temps will be in the 50s with an opportunity for showers, too.

This is an early look at the hourly forecast if you are headed out late for candy.

I’ll have an update on this next weekend.
