PORTLAND, Maine — Here we go....
Many of us receive the first snow of the season Thursday morning. A system will slide into the Northeast from the Great Lakes late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The storm is a very weak one, not much moisture and very little wind. However, a burst of moisture falling at the coldest part of the day has me believing that most of us will see our first flakes of the season. If it were January or February, I'd barely be talking about this. But the first snow, no matter how little it is, can be a tester. Minor accumulation and slick and slippery roads are looking likely for the Thursday morning commute.
The flakes arrive around dawn this morning. Surface temps will be marginal, right around 32 or even slightly higher, but a little pace to the snow can overcome that mild layer and accumulate on most surfaces. Toughest on the roads, for sure, but some of them will get snow coated, making for slick travel during the early morning hours.
By midday, the band of snow is shifting north, getting to Bangor and beyond. Milder air will be flowing in so snow will have flipped to sleet pellets and rain drops.
All precip will move north of Bangor and taper off by the late afternoon and evening. Snow showers will linger in northern Maine through the first half of Thursday night.
I'm thinking the (small) jackpot will fall a little away from the coast in southern Maine and New Hampshire.
