High winds add more power outages to Maine

Central Maine Power projects that virtually all its remaining customer outages will be restored by Tuesday evening.

PORTLAND, Maine — Last Updated: 2:20 p.m.

Rain and strong winds Monday overnight into Tuesday have caused additional widespread power outages. Wind gusts across Maine ranged from 43 mph in Portland to as high as 61 mph in Bangor.

Central Maine Power said it has approximately 6,500 accounts to restore, mostly in Penobscot and Waldo counties. Emera Maine says 10,363 customers are also without power.

UPDATE: Lamoine officials posted on Facebook at 9 a.m. that most of the town's residents have power back on and that Emera Maine is in the area working to restore the rest of the more than 380 residents still without power.

The town of Lamoine reported on its Facebook page that nearly the whole town was without power as of 4:00 a.m Tuesday because of the high winds.  Also, as of early this morning, Fox Run and Coolidge Crossing were closed because of a tree and downed power lines. Lamoine town officials say if you can't get water from your well because of a power outage there is a water spigot at the town hall. Officials say that water is for washing or flushing only... it has not been tested for drinking.

A spokesperson for Emera Maine says overnight winds caused the most damage in Hancock and Washington counties. Emera says more than 80 crews are expected to be on the job restoring power Tuesday morning.

The public is reminded to stay away from downed power lines or trees in contact with one. Drivers are also asked to slow down when approaching work crews on the side of the road, and to change lanes when passing if it is safe to do so.

Breezes out of the west will continue through the morning with temperatures mostly in the 50s today.
