PORTLAND, Maine — There is no doubt this winter took a while to get here. Temperatures stayed warm and melted possible snowfall before it could hit the ground. That kept parts of the state with much lower snow totals, especially southern Maine.
That doesn't mean the southern portion of the state didn't get any snow this season. Think back to the end of January, when back-to-back storms dropped a ton of snow. The heavier of the snow came on Jan. 23, when Portland got 9.1 inches. This landed on top of 8.0 inches of snow that had fallen just three days before. It's a good amount of snowfall, but we will beat both of those on Saturday.
Southern Maine is forecast to receive anywhere from 8-12 inches of snow with Portland expected to get around 10 inches of that. This should be Portland's biggest winter storm of the season thus far.
That isn't the story for the entire state.
Bangor received more snowfall all season long, which kept their totals where they should be. They are sitting on average for normal snow amounts for this winter. That same January storm brought 12.8 inches of snow to Bangor, totals followed by a different storm a month earlier.
This weekend's snow won't hit Bangor the same way it's hitting southern Maine. It won't even be in the top five highest snow totals of the season. Bangor is forecast to receive 4.5 inches of snow tomorrow, making it the sixth-highest snowstorm of the winter.
Southern Maine, get ready for a nice snow day!
Have fun and stay safe,
