'It was just incredible': Harpswell harbor master says storm damage among the worst he has seen

Paul Plummer said he's afraid Saturday's storm will finish destroying the town's public dock, which is used by fishermen and community members.

HARPSWELL, Maine — "It was just incredible," Harpswell's harbor master Paul Plummer said.

He described a bridge fully flooded where you would not think there was a bridge because it was all below water. Then he said the Maine Department of Transportation had to be called in after the storm because lots of water got into areas that had nowhere to drain.

"These poor folks were stranded. If they had small cars, they were not going to get through," Plummer said.

Plummer said the damage left behind from Wednesday's storm was some of the worst the town has ever seen.

"The damage is everywhere," Plummer said in shock. "You could see part of the surge taking part of the town's infrastructure right with it."

Many houses, bridges, roads, docks, and piers were severely damaged.

Plumer said he was really concerned about Saturday's storm, which NEWS CENTER Maine chief meteorologist Todd Gutner said would be very similar to Wednesday's and would hit coastal communities hardest.

"Everything is already weakened from this last storm. Seawalls were damaged or completely removed from people's property," he expressed. "If the meteorologists are correct and saying that the storm surge may surpass the 1978 surge, I think there will be some significant damage on top of what has already occurred."

Once Saturday's storm rolls through, Plummer said a deep assessment of the entire town would be made.

Plummer encourages everyone who suffered property damage to take pictures, document it, and report it. Click here to fill out that damage form from Maine Emergency Management Agency. He is also discouraged people from being out near the coast during the storm.

"If people want to go explore along the rocks tomorrow in Harpswell, please be careful," Plummer said.
