Casket spotted floating down Androscoggin River rapids after major storm

The casket is presumed to be empty and is still missing.

LEWISTON, Maine — There have been a lot of remarkable sights and sounds across the state in recent days, as ongoing damage and extreme flooding from the storm this week have made their mark, but this footage captured in the Lewiston-Auburn area may be the most unusual.

An object that appeared to be a casket was spotted Tuesday floating down the white rapids of the flooded Androscoggin River just one day after a powerful storm brought high winds and heavy rain to the Pine Tree State.

The video was sent to us by a viewer, Tracy Grondin, who said she was taking pictures of the flooded river in Lewiston with her fiancé when they spotted a strange object that went over the Great Falls and was traveling down the river toward Lisbon.

After a closer look, Grondin said it appeared to be a casket.

She took video and photos, which she said she showed to Lewiston city workers.

Those workers apparently called law enforcement agencies along the river to tell them to be on the lookout for a casket.

In an update Thursday, Grondin said she heard from a director of the Veterans Memorial along the Great Falls who told her he was "quite certain" it was their time capsule, which was buried in the park that flooded after the storm.

While it is presumably confirmed to be a casket, the director told Grondin there was no body inside and that they're still looking for it.  NEWS CENTER Maine has reached out to law enforcement agencies in the area but has not yet heard back.
