WASHINGTON — According to the National Highway Safety Administration, driving on a road with wet leaves can be just as slick as icy conditions in winter. They say, water droplets on leaves can make it difficult for tires to find traction. This can cause your car to skid more easily than navigating clear wet roads. Leaves can also mask potholes or other obstacles on the roadway.
Tips to safely navigate driving on wet leaves:
- Brake slowly - If you need to reduce your speed, avoid slamming on the brakes. Doing so can cause your tires to spin out.
- Leave extra room - Maintain at least two car lengths between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
- Keep your car clean - Before you hit the road, make sure you clear the exterior of your car of any wet leaves stuck to the roof or windshield.
- Check your tires - You should check your cars tire tread throughout the year and make sure they pass the "penny test." Low tread can make your car skid more easily.
- Slow down - Whether there are leaves down or not, you should always reduce your speed as you would during heavy rain, icy or snowy conditions.
