Northern Maine businesses affected by storm

Many businesses closed in Houlton and other parts of Aroostook County, while others braved the storm.
Many of downtown Houlton's shops were closed due to the tough travel conditions of Tuesday's storm.

HOULTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) –

It was raining Monday night, there was sleet Tuesday morning, and then a decent amount of snow all day in Houlton and other parts of Aroostook County, making driving pretty difficult. There was snow and slush piled high on the ground.

School was cancelled and many small businesses downtown were closed because of the storm.

But for some, they weren't going to let the snow stop them from working.

The roads were pretty slippery all day with lots of slush.

The snow was coming down quickly enough that the roads were still covered and driving was definitely concerning, despite the fact that the plow trucks were hard at work all day.

Luckily, there were no reported car accidents because of the storm in the Houlton area.

But this did have an effect on businesses. Some were closed all day, while others had to close early.

But certain businesses stayed open despite the slow day.

As Mike Hawkes, general manager of Hogan Tires in Houlton, said, "It's just a storm in Northern Maine. So we take it with a grain of salt and continue on."

Galen Wilde, owner of a coin shop in town, said his business wasn't too affected by the storm. He said that he enjoyed the down time to get some paperwork done. "Everybody seemed to come today. All the delivery people brought their deliveries on time. I've had several customers - more than I expected. It's probably because of the time of year...most of them were just buying Christmas gifts."

As many Houlton residents said, those businesses didn't close because this is northern Maine, and driving in the snow just comes with the territory.
