MAINE, USA — The northern lights are something many people wait their entire lives to see, and Mainers got to see just that Thursday night.
NEWS CENTER Maine viewers have shared photos from across the state.
It all has to do with the solar wind, which is made up of charged protons and electrons from the sun. The protons and electrons travel toward the earth and enter at the poles, which are the field's strongest points.
The electrons then collide with molecules in our atmosphere, resulting in the different colors we see in the sky. Green or red for oxygen molecules, and blue or pink for nitrogen.
You can submit your own photos through the Near ME feature on the NEWS CENTER Maine app.
