Are we done with snow for the season?

Spring usually has a bit of snow, but has that already come and gone?

MAINE, USA — Are we done with snow for the season?  The short answer is: most likely.

We need a couple ingredients to get snow. Cold air and moisture need to overlap for snowflakes to fly, and that's something we haven't seen for some time now.

The last time Portland saw any snowfall was on March 25, and that was only 0.3 inches. Bangor received snow about a week later to kick off April and got an inch. This is a relatively "normal" timeline for us to wrap up our snow maps. We're normally done with the snow by the second week of April.

But that doesn't mean we don't still get snow at this time of the year. It doesn't happen too often, but it does happen.

Portland only gets snow once every 16 years after today (April 25). Snow falls a bit more often in other areas like Bangor, where it occurs every 9 years.  It happens even more often in Caribou.

Cold air + moisture = snow. We are set to stick with normal temperatures for the first week of May, which means lows should stay around 40 degrees. That's not looking the best for getting snow in the forecast.

Everything said, it's not impossible. Portland and Bangor had snowfall as late as May 11 back in 1945 and 1946.

These dates aren't all decades ago, either. Bangor received one inch of snow on May 9, 2020.

So are we done with the snowfall?  We should be. The numbers point to the snow being done, but you can never say never.

Enjoy the rain!
