BANGOR, Maine — Bangor International Airport has been almost entirely closed since Monday, Oct. 4, for runway repairs.
Nearly all flights in and out of the airport have been canceled to allow workers time to repair the middle and south end portions of the runway, though one flight left the airport early Monday morning, said airport director Tony Caruso.
"We have what’s known as alkali-silica reaction, where the concrete creates some deformations," Caruso said. "The runway is safe because we’ve been taking care of it, but we actually have to get contractors in there to relieve that pressure and then properly fix [the runway] for the long term."
Caruso told NEWS CENTER Maine the construction will cost $635,758 and is on schedule. The airport is expected to resume regular operations on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
The last time the airport’s runway was closed for repairs was over 20 years ago during its last runway rehabilitation, Caruso said.
