Woman, child seriously injured in Woolwich crash

Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said evidence appears to indicate the crash was alcohol-related.

WOOLWICH, Maine — A woman and child were seriously injured in a crash in Woolwich on Wednesday.

It happened around 7 p.m. near 1044 Middle Road, also referred to as Route 127, Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said in a press release Thursday.

Merry said a preliminary investigation showed that Chloe Monsen, 31, of Bath, was driving north on Route 127 in a 2007 Toyota Rav-4 when the vehicle veered across the northbound lane and left the roadway, colliding head-on with a cluster of trees.

Monsen had to be removed from the vehicle by first responders, according to Merry. She was flown to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening, the release stated.

Monsen was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to Merry. He also said evidence appears to indicate the crash was alcohol-related.

A 4-year-old boy was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He was taken to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries, according to the release.

"The child had been secured in a child-safety seat, preventing more critical injuries," Merry said.

"With the summer season upon us, traffic is increasing and it’s important that everyone do their part to prevent drunk driving.”

The crash reconstruction is being done by by members of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, Brunswick Police Department, and Freeport Police Department. The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing.

The Woolwich Fire Department and Woolwich EMS also assisted at the scene.
