WESTBROOK, Maine — A large fuel spill into an underground electrical utility led to the closure of Main Street in Westbrook on Tuesday.
The closure is in the area of 925 Main St., the Westbrook Fire Department said in a 7:42 a.m. social media post. Businesses in the area were evacuated and their power was turned off, according to the post. By 3 p.m., the road had reopened.
The fuel spill happened at the Friendly Gas station, fire officials told NEWS CENTER Maine. The fire department's social media post said as much as 800 gallons may have been spilled, but a fire department lieutenant clarified with NEWS CENTER Maine at the scene that it was actually closer to 100 gallons.
The fire department said crews would remain on scene and the road would remain closed until the hazard was mitigated.
Central Maine Power and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection also responded to the scene, fire officials said.
